This series of illustrations demonstrates a new bio-filtration technology implemented at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. This novel system saves thousands of gallons of water a year by completing the nitrogen cycle within the aquarium. The bacteria Thiobacillus denitrificans is an anaerobic chemolithotroph that couples the oxidation of sulfur to the reduction of nitrate and nitrite to produce nitrogen.
